Lance Scott - Artist's Statement
The subject of my work is transition
and revelation. My focus is on the rhythm and patterns that move
in and out of form. Abstraction allows for a musical response
to the physical world, a lyrical response to the seemingly solid.
It is also malleable and open to create a poetic language that
can bridge polarities in the mind.
Drawing on my experience as a dancer,
and my romance with the natural world, I work in my studio with
a variety of pace and technique. Collaborating with the materials,
I explore the relationship of accident and invocation, inspiration
and surprise, as well as microscopic and telescopic vision. The
push and pull of erotic form and texture is always part of my
work as well as movements of ascension, dissension, and horizontal
flow. Adding and subtracting, rendering and destroying, I stop
when the surface is both expanding and contracting, when there
is a sense of place and history, and when an image is able to
carry a momentum on its own.
My goal is to create landscapes
and gardens that are celebratory and restorative; that hint at
an emotional and psychological resurrection. |
